Twiggy Forrest Tops Aussie Rich List...                                  January 2nd 26th, 2007

Twice in the last 6 weeks, the wealth of Andrew Forrest, grand nephew of Western Australia's first Premier, Lord John Forrest, has increased by - wait for it - $1 billion - between breakfast and lunch as the shares in his company Fortescue Metal Group have continued their upward climb from an adjusted 72c a share to $7.20 a share in 18 months. That values FMG at $20.2 billion and Forrest owns nearly 40% of the shares.

This latest rise puts Forrest ahead in the wealth stakes of Jamie Packer who was Australia's wealthiest individual for a short period following his father Kerry's death on Boxing Day 2006.

With iron ore prices expected to increase by another 30% this year, and FMG planning to ship their first ore in May this year, you can expect the fortunes of West Australia's iron ore barons to continue to rise for a few years yet.

Recently Andrew Forrest gifted shares, worth $94 million at the time, to his favourite charity.

Lord John Forrest is best remembered for his work as Western Australia's first Premier where he instigated two very ambitious projects. The was the Fremantle Harbour Works, one of the few public works of the 1890s which is still in use today; and the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme, one of the greatest engineering feats of its time, in which the Helena River was dammed and the water piped over 550 kilometres (330 miles) to Kalgoorlie.

In the family history of my family - the Tomlinson's - there is a great story about our brush with Lord Forrest. My Aunt Ruth tells the story: "Mum was singing at the Mill ( in Karridale ) one evening for the then Sir John Forrest, and he was so impressed he questioned if she and Dad owned land. When told not, he granted her a piece of land."

The land was Lot 968, Karridale ( Boranup ) and the family built their homestead "Forestdale".

Tomlinson Steel, now called RCR Tomlinson, is Western Australia's oldest public company and was founded by my great uncles as The Black Swan Foundry, running from Wellington to Murray Street in Perth. By co-incidence, my current office is in Wellington Street, Perth.

I am often asked "what happened to your part of the wealth??" Well, the Tomlinson's bred like rabbits, and my grandmother was the 13th of 14 children, and by that time, there wasn't too much of the family wealth left.

RCR Tomlinson still operates to this day.

So here ends this instalment of the history of the "Boy from Margaret River."

P.S.  Did you know some of the wealthiest people in the world are really very stingy? Take John Caudwell, who got his start as an auto-repair shop owner and went on to create a $2.2 billion fortune (when last measured by Forbes in March) by selling his 85% stake in cellphone outfit the Caudwell Group in 2005. An avid sportsman, he used to bike 14 miles to work every day. he cuts his own hair because going to a barber is a waste of time and he buys his clothes off the rack at British retailer Marks & Spencer.

P.P.S.  And having a few bob means that you should be careful not to spoil the kids. Indian billionaire Azim Premji made his $17.1 billion fortune through tech-services giant Wipro. Despite being one of Asia's richest men, Premji drives a Toyota Corolla, flies coach and stays in company guest houses instead of five-star hotels when travelling on business. He even served food on paper plates at a lunch honouring his son's wedding.

Simple Secrets of Successful People - Competence Starts With Feeling Competent

For most people studied, the first step toward improving their job performance had nothing to do with the job itself but instead with improving how they felt about themselves.

In fact, for eight in ten people, self-image matters more in how they rate their job performance than does their actual job performance!

MAVERICK QUOTE OF THE DAY

"My mother was determined to make us independent. When I was four years old, she stopped the car a few miles from our house and made me find my own way home across the fields.

I got hopelessly lost."

Feedback:   What makes sharing with you in The Maverick Spirit so special is that I get so much feedback - encouragment, raps on the knuckles, great material and more. Thanks for all of your efforts and positive thoughts. 2008 will be great too!

Here are  few more  comments I have received since I wrote last time.

Wayne,

Thank you for your words, they are uplifting and thought provoking. It is funny today I read your words about trying different approaches to problems that we aren’t able to solve normally and yesterday I was being told that to keep trying and the believing the same things when our world and situations change daily may not be the smartest thing if we are not getting the desired results.

Thank you for helping to solidify some concepts for me.
