"If you can imagine it, you can achieve it
If you can dream it, you can become it."   WILLIAM ARTHUR WARD

Are you a prisoner of your past...                   February 28th,  2007

A great friend, Joan Jensen who I written about previously sent me this story. Whether it is true, after all Mark Twain wasn't a real person was he, or just an urban myth, the story has a strong message. So, here goes... and thanks Joan for thinking of me.

Investing Psychology and the story of MARK TWAIN

Does negative past experiences influence YOUR future financial prosperity?

Many people are burdened by past negative experiences in life and are unable to raise their level of prosperity, thus continually allowing negativity to dictate their life. Allow me to enlighten you with a further pertinent story.

The Financial Story of MARK TWAIN

Mark Twain was sitting on his veranda one evening having a beer with his neighbour, who happened to be his local barber. A smartly dressed salesman called and was invited to sit and join them and make his presentation.

The salesman went to great lengths to explain that he represented a business house marketing shares in a new product for a new company that was going to take the world by storm, and would make thousands, and possibly millions, for those who helped to finance the company now, by buying shares.

Mark Twain chased the man off his veranda.

"Get out of here. I've been caught before with these wild share schemes. Why just last year I bought a whole heap of x shares in a new company and within a very few months the company had folded up and I lost all my money. I will never buy shares again."

The man left and the barber neighbour escorted him off the premises. However the barber, who had not had a bad shares experience, was very interested in what he had heard, and invited the salesman to his place, next door, and he listened to the story again. The barber bought into the company and made millions!

Mark Twain made nothing! Why?

Because the company was selling a new invention called the Bell Telephone. Mark Twain surrendered to his deductive mindset and limiting beliefs, hence passing up on a wonderful opportunity. As for Mark Twain, he remained in debt for a considerable portion of his life until his death in 1910.

The lesson here for all of us is that we must replenish and invigorate our exuberance for life by continually persevering regardless of the circumstances.

The Latin phrase known to most Investors and Entrepreneurs is' Carpe Diem.' It means seize the day.

ACTION STEP: Look at every opportunity with a fresh point of view.

P.S. Did you know when Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835, Halley's Comet was visible in the sky over Florida, Missouri. It did not pass very near to the earth that year, but its presence was enough to create a legend.

P.P.S.  Aware throughout his life that he was born when Halley's Comet was visible, Mark Twain predicted in 1909 that he would die when it returned: "I came in with Halley's Comet in 1835. It is coming again next year, and I expect to go out with it.... He was right.

When Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910, Halley's Comet was once again visible in the sky.

Remember that just the moment you say, "I give up!", someone else seeing the same situation is saying, "My, what a great opportunity!"

Never give anybody a fondue set or anything painted avocado green.

Carry your own alarm when travelling as hotel wake-up calls are sometimes unreliable.

Take along a small gift for the host when you are a dinner guest. A book is a good choice.

MAVERICK QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Do the hardest thing on earth for you.
Act for yourself.
Face the truth."

Katherine Mansfield

Samuel Maverick (1803-70) Texan rancher who, when branding of stock was introduced chose "Not to Brand." Every unbranded horse or cow he then claimed as a Maverick!

Feedback:   I have selected just a couple of comments today from fellow Maverick Spiriters.. and I hope to hear from you soon with your words of encouragement, wisdom and resolve.

This comments relate to the last issue of The Maverick Spirit - Success is NEVER ending - Failure is NEVER final.

Wayne,

Always remember that when you are treading through thick mud, you leave footprints behind that mark out a path for others who are looking for a way
through their challenges.

Here's quote from the wisest man who ever lived - Solomon:

"Look straight ahead.
Fix your eyes on what lies before you.
Mark out a straight path for your feet;
then stick to the path and stay safe.
Don't get sidetracked..." Proverbs 4:25, New Living Version.

You inspire others.

Hi Wayne

I know that maybe there are people who disagree with you on some things - so what? As long as you are benevolent and not malevolent - if your intentions are good - then 'So what?' All things pass, sometimes you have to stand still and, as Robert Schuller said, remember the good you achieve and the things you enjoy in this life.

Don't they outweigh the bad? If they don't - then you need to take action.
I like Robert Schuller - I always have.  His comments come very close to a new theme in psychology driven by a man I know you admire, Martin Seligman, called Positive Psychology.

The Maverick Spirit comes straight from the heart - I know this as a clinician and as a fellow human being. I want to give you my support and to encourage you never to give up publishing it.

I hope to publish my own newsletter soon and yours is an inspiration.

Thanks for those words of wisdom I needed to hear that today.

But not everyone is a fan:

To whom it may concern,

Your continuous emails have become somewhat annoying.
Would you be kind enough to stop sending me emails?
I would much rather you send me information in the mail if you want to inform me of something.
You are clearly taking advantage of this and should stop immediately.

Thank you for your understanding.

But then again...

Hi Wayne

I've never written a letter like this before. But you have my permission to keep on sending me the Maverick Spirit. And I'm quite pleased to receive other emails from you too. I often enjoy the Maverick Spirit, particularly the latest, Success is NEVER ending...Failure is NEVER final. And I have attended three or four seminars or workshops you conducted in Brisbane and found them useful.

Yours are not the type of emails I have ever considered to be spam - there's plenty which is! Now, if only we could get you to work on those apostrophes!
