"If you can imagine it, you can achieve it
If you can dream it, you can become it."   WILLIAM ARTHUR WARD

I Have Learned...                                                          December 19th, 2007

These words are written by Andy Rooney, a man who has the gift of saying so much with so few words.

I've learned... that the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

I've learned... that when you're in love, it shows.

I've learned... that just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.

I've learned... that having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

I've learned... that being kind is more important than being right.

I've learned... that you should never say "no" to a gift from a child.

I've learned... that no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to be goofy with.

I've learned... that sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

I've learned... that simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child, did wonders for me as an adult.

I've learned... that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

I've learned... that we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

I've learned... that money doesn't buy class.

I've learned... that it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

I've learned... that under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

I've learned... that the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

I've learned... that to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

I've learned... that when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

I've learned... that love, not time, heals all wounds.

I've learned... that the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

I've learned... that everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

I've learned... that there is nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling their breath on your cheek.

I've learned... that no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

I've learned... that life is tough, but I am tougher.

I've learned... that opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

I've learned... that when you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I've learned... that I wish I could have told my mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.

I've learned... that one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

I've learned... that a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

I've learned... that I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

I've learned... that when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.

I've learned... that everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

I've learned... that it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.

I've learned... that the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

P.S.  Did you know that studies have been done to see whether people are more inclined to vote for candidates who look like them? Four researchers at Stanford University did and conclusions where: Men were significantly more likely to support a candidate who resembled them. But among women, just the opposite was true.

P.P.S.  Thinking about having a tequila or two over Christmas? Mexican researchers believe the blue agave plant that produces tequila also contains compounds that could deliver drugs to the colon, making it possible to treat everything from colon cancer to colitis.

As a regular traveller I like this advice: Never complain about a flight delayed for mechanical repairs. Waiting on the ground is infinitely better than the alternative.

MAVERICK QUOTE OF THE DAY

"All the adversity I've had in my life,
all my troubles and obstacles,
have strengthened me...
You may not realize it when it happens,
but a kick in the teeth may be
the best thing in the world for you. "

Walt Disney

Samuel Maverick (1803-70) Texan rancher who, when branding of stock was introduced chose "Not to Brand." Every unbranded horse or cow he then claimed as a Maverick!

Feedback:   I am stunned... your feedback continues to come. Whether it's about "It's Been A Long Year" issue, the follow up Maverick Spirit on Edison or Bob Parsons "16 Rules".  I thank you for continuing to enjoy the Maverick Spirit - the effort that you have taken to write is greatly appreciated.

Here are just a few more  comments I have received since I wrote last time.

It is a sad day and a sleepless night by the looks of things to send emails at 2.08 am.

Hope it gets better today and the saying in my desk calendar states:

"We must tap into our own loving-kindness in order to set an example for others to follow suit".

Have a fabulous day.

Hi Wayne,

You’re exactly right with what you are thinking why some people take matters in their own hands. I tend to swear to myself a hundred times when such things happen.

Cheers!

Merci Lotho

Thanks Wayne

I am expecting great things to happen today even if they are only the smaller variety of things, they all go together to make the day a most wonderful day of life on this planet and hopefully one in which I can be of use to many others. It is always good to hear from inspirational people.

Hello Wayne

If you stop writing your "Spirit" it means "you time" is being discounted. My husband taught me that I should always put myself first...being rather devoted to husband and children, I have been putting myself last. The energy available for everyone increases when I put myself first. I have been missing the "spirit". My husband, Raymond, blogs too...it is inspiring for him doing the blogging...so there you go. His site is "compunite.co.za".

I wanted to say, not "mickey mouse", that is too conservative and square, two dimensional. Rather some or other character from "Winnie the Pooh". There is inspiration and "multi-dimensionality" if such a word exists.

Have a happy Christmas and an inspiring new year.

Lots of love,
Neena Koekemoer.

Hi Wayne

Such is the self-absorbed nature of human beings (well, me anyway) that all I could think of was that you’d deleted me for some reason – I never gave a thought to the possibility that YOU might be having some difficulties.

Your story about the court system could be made into one of those awful cringe-worthy comedies. Anyway, so glad to hear from you again and to be receiving your pearls of wisdom, witticisms and interesting trivia. The world seems right again somehow.

Kind regards

Thank you for the effort, commitment and foresight you share with your newsletter. I understand the intrinsic pressure that comes to bear in getting things done and allocating time in one’s mind to complete tasks, only to find that the day is done yet again and it’s time to prepare for another dawn.

Such is life and time and matters of justice!!!

May the holiday season be a blessed one, bringing renewed strength, clarity and joy.

With regards

Alison Beckett

And I will include some more next issue... I appreciate that you feel strongly enough to offer advice and encouragement. Sometimes the motivator needs motivation too... and I can feel all your thought helping my spirit rebuild. Thank you all!
