Perseverance

Try, Try Again

‘Tis a lesson you should heed,
Try, try again;
If at first you don’t succeed,
Try, try again;
Then your courage should appear,
For, if you will persevere,
You will conquer, never fear,
Try, Try again.

In the famous Aesop fable, The Crow and The Pitcher, we are told that where there’s a will accompanied by practical intelligence, there’s a way.

Once there was a thirsty crow. She had flown a long way looking for water to drink.
Suddenly she saw a pitcher. She flew down and saw it held a little water, but it was so low in the pitcher that she cold not reach it.

“But I must have that water,” she cried. “I am too weary to fly farther. What shall I do? I’ll tip the pitcher over.”

She beat it with her wings, but it was too heavy. She could not move it.

Then she thought a while. “I know now! I will break it! Then I will drink the water as it pours out. How good it will taste.”

With beak and claws and wings she threw herself against the pitcher. But it was too strong.

The poor crow stopped to rest. “What shall I do now? I cannot die of thirst with water so close by. There must be a way, if I only had wit enough to find it out.”

After a while the crow had a bright idea. There were many small stones lying about. She picked them up one by one and dropped them into the pitcher. Slowly the water rose, till at last she could drink it. How food it tasted!

“There is always a way out of hard places,” said the crow, “if only we have the wit to find it.”

P.S.  Did you know that Frank McEnroe, no relation to John the tennis player I am reliably informed, who hailed from Bendigo, invented the Chico Roll in 1951. Originally including chicken in its ingredients, the Chico Roll has a mixture of barley, celery, onion, carrot and cabbage with beef mince. About 2 million are sold each month, and whilst they might look light and crispy, after being reheated a dozen times they taste like deep-fried linoleum with soggy stuff inside.

P.P.S.  Australia has more sheep than any other country in the world... we probably have a few less due to the long running drought but apparently we had 177.8 million of the creatures in 1990. For one hundred years, before the miners took over, it was said that Australia "rode on the sheeps' back."

Sheep and Chico Rolls can been seen side by side at the Perth Royal Show!

Never decide to do nothing just because you can only do a little.

Grind it out. Hanging on just one second longer than you competition makes you the winner.

Never buy anything from a rude salesperson, no matter how much you want it..

MAVERICK QUOTE OF THE DAY

"What we call luck,
what we call chance,
is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

Samuel Maverick (1803-70) Texan rancher who, when branding of stock was introduced chose "Not to Brand." Every unbranded horse or cow he then claimed as a Maverick!

Hi Wayne,

Love The Old Phone story. In my mentoring of school leavers and young adults, it is the biggest focus I press on young people today, always look for opportunities to make a difference in at least one persons day, every day.

The results are astonishing. I have found that so many young people without so-called technical skill, have a magnificent underlying quality that in many cases is unknown or foreign to the owner, I believe they call it personality. The personality can become a beacon of light in many a strangers, friend or colleagues day, and the light gets powered by a simply nice word or gesture.

We are born with a our own personality, but as we progress through life we tend to concentrate more on increasing our technical and mental skill with the belief that more skill will lead to better opportunities and leave our personality to the social arena.

Fast food chains like McDonalds and KFC, who claim to give young adults a good start to their working life, could take a bit more time to enhance personality instead up selling. A warm hello, friendly service and a thank you, sounds and tastes better than a flat “would you like fries with that”.

Throw a complement as often as you can, it feels great!!!!
