This time last week I had just given my presentation to the Sales and Marketing
Institute of New Zealand in Auckland... and the reception was
fantastic... and I am taken by how proud Kiwis are at being Kiwis.
It reminds me of how proud Aussies are of being Aussies
especially when we re winning at sport. I didn't mention the cricket today
where we "thumped the Kiwis" in India.
But why am I writing to you today... apart from saying thanks for all the
support I have been receiving about our challenges with the Government and
the "fanciful" $5.5 million. On the product table of Pat
Armitstead, who also spoke at the Seminar on being a Joyologist,
is a great book called Silver Linings on the Great White Cloud. And I
am drawn to the story about Colonel Sanders and the challenges of adversity.
Did you know that Colonel Sanders was turned down 1,009 times
before anyone bought the rights to his KFC chicken recipe?
Harlan Sanders owned restaurant/motel/service station business and at the
age 63 was offered nearly $200,000 for it. Deciding he was too young to
retire he turned down the offer. Two years later the state built a new
superhighway that bypassed his business and within a year he had to
close down.
Living off a benefit he went back to what he knew best - cooking chicken.
With just recipe and his car, he set off to sell his idea to the world,
often sleeping in his car because he couldn't afford to pay for
accommodation.
After 1,009 knock-backs, he found someone who believed in his recipe
and the first KFC restaurant was opened. There re now nearly 33,000 KFC
restaurants around the world.
Do you have what it takes to keep trying after 1,009 setbacks? If not, what
might you be missing out on??
So, as I prepare for the first seminar in New Zealand by our new associate
Business Seminars New Zealand tomorrow, I encourage those of you who are
feeling that it might be getting bit too hard, you might just be one more
knock back away from your ultimate success.
Keep at it... you deserve success!

P.S. Did you
know that whilst we are worrying about cheap labour from India it won't
be a be concern that disappears soon. It is estimated that there will be 24
million babies born in India in 2006 - equal to Australia's total
population! It is estimated, baby bonus aside, we will have 250,000 babies
born in Australia in 2006.
P.P.S. Flying isn't everything! New Zealand's famous bird, the Kiwi
can't fly. It lives in a hole in the ground, is almost blind and lays one egg
each year. Despite this, it has survived for more than 70 million
years.

Feedback: I have selected just 1 letter today which
brought a lump to my throat...
and I hope to hear from you soon with your words of encouragement, wisdom and
resolve.
Hello Wayne,
Thank you for continuing the journey, and regarding the inspiration - I am
glad to have returned the favour. Reading your emails over the years always got
me thinking and asking myself what more I could be – they inspired me. I think
it was where I got the quote from “accept the challenges so you may feel the
exhilaration of victory”. How fantastic that feels.
The walk has changed the course of my life, I am now employed by Interplast
Australia as a fundraising manager. Interplast send teams of
reconstructive surgeons overseas to repair cleft palates and burn contractures.
Amazing work has been done by this organisation in its 23 year history in
Australia – over 16,000 operations. Some of the pictures break my heart but the
surgery is relatively simple, dramatic and the change in the life of the patient
is instant and profound. They now go to school, have friends and contribute to
the betterment of their society.
I have done a few talks around the traps for the walk across the Simpson and
would be happy to give a talk to your groups about the walk should you ever feel
its appropriate. The talk I give is basically about how we did it and that one
person really can make a difference. Let me know if I can help in any way.
I wish you well in your November seminar and know whilst not always easy you
have the spirit to endure all of life’s challenges.
Thank you.
